The Healthy MYTH of the Fast Food IndustryFast food has dominated the American restaurant industry for the past several decades. As a culture, our eating habits haven’t always been so tied to drive-thru specials and processed foods, but at this point, overcoming the fast food draw is a difficult feat.

As tempting as a quick meal from a drive-thru might be, it is a plain and simple fact that if your goal is to be healthy and lose weight, then you are better off staying far away from the drive-thru.

Fast Food: In the History Books

When McDonalds first opened its doors in the mid-1950s, it wasn’t with drive-thru lines and dollar menu specials. The restaurant sold smaller portions and people sat down to eat their food, like you would at a regular restaurant. When they introduced their first drive-thru, it wasn’t to make it more convenient for packed minivans and rushed business people to get their food with less of a hassle, it was actually to accommodate soldiers who weren’t permitted to leave their vehicles. So what happened? McDonalds is just an example here. The bottom line is that our whole society has become more dependent on fast and processed food, and less focused on maintaining a healthy diet.

Now that the word is out about obesity being such a big issue in the United States, and how tied fast food companies are to the problem, there are a lot of fast food chains who are trying hard to get on the health food bandwagon and keep some of their customers. The problem: healthier is not necessarily healthy.

Over the past 15 years, fast food menus have expanded by over 50 percent. In that time span, the obesity rate in the United States has continued to grow steadily. While the menus at so many fast food restaurants now include healthy-sounding items like salads and parfaits, the restaurants often load the items with additives and artificial flavors in an attempt to make people like them more.

Here are a few examples of fast food health attempts gone astray:

  • Salted meat add-ons to just about any meal (or dessert). Bacon is starting to make an appearance on menu items where no one ever saw it coming, including ice cream sundaes at certain eateries! Chicken BLT salads are available at almost every fast food restaurant. Between the crispy (read: breaded and fried) chicken, bacon and cream-based (read: fatty) dressings, these salads can have over 700 calories.
  • “Smoothies” are often synonymous with Milkshake. Somehow the term “smoothie” has made its way from the sweet treat it truly is to an acceptable beverage with a meal. A smoothie is loaded with sugar and extra calories—especially smoothies from fast food restaurants. Many of the smoothies have the same amount of calories as the dessert items, so stay clear!

After weight loss surgery, you are going to need to stick to your bariatric surgeon’s guidelines, and this will probably mean avoiding the drive thru lane altogether. But even before you undergo weight loss surgery it is a good idea to get the facts straight about fast food items.
