By definition, general surgery refers to a surgery focused on the abdomen, intestines, and alimentary canal. Bariatric surgery is aimed at the upper abdomen area and includes an operation on one part of the alimentary canal, usually the stomach pouch. 

So yes, bariatric surgery, by definition, is a type of general surgery, but a general surgeon can’t perform it before they get at least one year of post-op training and gain minimally invasive fellowship and weight loss surgery training.

So bariatric surgery is considered general surgery, however, it is a year of post-op training for having a minimally invasive fellowship and weight loss surgery to know those and learn those procedures that are necessary to have good weight loss procedures and techniques.
