Schedule Bariatric Surgery

Table of Contents

Bariatric surgery has helped many people to gain control over their weight, but it is not suitable for everyone. Since there are several types of bariatric surgeries, before choosing, consult with your medical doctor and go through all options. Only then you will be sure which is the best solution for you. Your medical doctor should also introduce you to all criteria that you should meet for different bariatric surgery types and direct you to all tests that you need to do prior to surgery.

Medical Guidelines

Weight loss surgery is a life-changing procedure that may not be appropriate for every overweight person. The medical community has established a series of guidelines and a screening process to help you and your surgeon decide if bariatric surgery is a good option for you.

In addition to these medical guidelines, insurance companies may have other criteria that must be met before you can qualify for reimbursement for your surgery. In this module, we look at general qualification criteria that you should be familiar with.

General Qualification Criteria

Not meeting these criteria does not automatically mean you are excluded from bariatric surgery. The only way to be sure if you qualify for surgery is to talk to us and undergo an initial evaluation.

Lap Band Surgery Criteria

Lap band surgery is a proven method for people who have been unsuccessful with other forms of weight loss to finally find success.

Lap band may be a good choice for you if:

  • Your Body Mass Index (BMI) is 40 or higher
  • You are at least 30 lb overweight w/ a BMI of 30 or more and have one or more obesity-related illness
  • You are at least 18 years of age
  • Ready to make lifestyle changes

Dr. Choi About Lap Band Surgery

So after seeing me from the initial consultation, you’ll come to my office to discuss the procedure. If necessary, we will order certain tests like the stress test to make sure your heart is okay, and then we will find the facility and guide you to where you can go to get that test done.

The lap band surgery is done laparoscopically, through four little incisions, and the total procedure time should be forty minutes or less. It’s a same-day procedure, I’ll see you in recovery, make sure everything is good. You’ll have two or three cups of water, making sure that everything is fine, and then you’ll go home.

If you are struggling with obesity, we are here to help you. When you are ready to discuss your weight loss surgery options, contact us to schedule an appointment.
