Since bariatric surgery is done on the stomach or a part of the stomach, many people wonder if there are any limitations when it comes to working out.
The answer depends on many factors, but the overall conclusion is that a light workout, especially walking, before surgery can help you prepare your body for the surgery.
The same exercise can be done after the surgery, and once you fully recover, you can start adding some resistance bands or weights to your workout regime.
Always remember that consistency is more important that the intensity of your workouts.
Pre and Post Surgery Workouts
Another question that I’ve been getting from my patients is “Dr. Choi, do you recommend any pre or post-op workouts, or what do you recommend on how to exercise?”
Pre-Surgery Workouts
Preoperatively I tell my patients to get in their steps, or try to get a pedometer, or start walking a little bit and have consistency when trying to exercise prior to their surgeries because this will help them get a little bit of weight loss prior and also will help them postoperatively. They’ll feel better after the surgery.
Post-Surgery Workouts
Postoperatively I try to tell my patients to continue their walking and to include or incorporate bands or resistant bands that will help them, and also later on just walking for 30 minutes, and every week to add 5 minutes to reach their goal of an hour a day, four to five times a week. Thank you so much!
